Clever SSO for Schools
Let K-12 students, teachers, and staff sign in to your Chipp app with their school district's Clever account.
Clever SSO lets students, teachers, and district staff log into your Chipp app with the same Clever account they already use at school. No separate Chipp password required.
Clever SSO must be activated for your account before the toggle appears.
Clever requires a district-level partnership (Clever Complete) and per-district approval before any real district can log in. Until Chipp activates Clever for the platform, the “Clever Sign-In” option does not appear in your app settings.
To get started today: contact your Chipp account contact or email support@chipp.ai to request Clever activation for the districts you are working with.
How Activation Works
Getting Clever SSO live is a two-stage process:
| Stage | Who does it | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1: Chipp + your district set up Clever | Chipp team + district administrator | Chipp signs a Clever Complete agreement, registers the platform app with Clever, and provisions credentials. The district admin approves the Chipp app in their Clever administrator dashboard. This takes roughly 1-2 weeks for Clever certification. |
| Stage 2: You enable it on your app | You (the builder) | Once Stage 1 is complete, a “Clever Sign-In” toggle appears in your app’s Access settings. Flip it on and your users see “Continue with Clever.” |
Your Chipp contact will let you know when Stage 1 is complete and the toggle is available.
Enabling Clever Sign-In on Your App
Once Chipp has activated Clever for the platform, follow these steps:
1
Go to your app’s Build page, then click the Access tab.
2
Find the Clever Sign-In card and flip the toggle on.
If you do not see this toggle, Clever has not been activated for the platform yet. Contact support@chipp.ai to check on status.
3
The toggle saves automatically. No need to re-publish your app.
Optionally, pair Clever Sign-In with the Required or Restricted auth mode so users must sign in before chatting.
What Your Users See
Once Clever Sign-In is enabled, users who open your app’s in-chat auth card will see a Continue with Clever button alongside the standard email/password form (in both the signup and login views).
When a user clicks the button:
- A Clever login popup opens. The user selects their district and signs in with their school credentials.
- Clever returns the user’s identity to Chipp.
- The user lands back in your app, signed in and ready to chat.
If you have enabled SSO-Only mode in your Access settings, the email/password form is hidden and only the SSO buttons are shown.
What Chipp Stores
After a successful Clever sign-in, Chipp records:
- The user’s Clever district and role (student, teacher, staff, or district admin) on their profile. These appear under “About this user” in the conversation view.
- Students who do not have a school-issued email address on file receive an internal placeholder address so their chat history still saves correctly. This placeholder is never displayed to the user and is never emailed.
FERPA and COPPA compliance are addressed as part of the Clever Complete agreement and certification process.
Signing in with Clever is not the same as connecting Clever data.
“Continue with Clever” verifies who the user is. It does not give your app access to Clever rostering data (student rosters, class lists, etc.) as a tool. If you need roster data inside the chat, that requires a separate integration.
