AI is moving quickly. 💨

Here are the highlights from the week that was in AI and Chipplandia and our spicy takes on what it actually means 🌶️:

AI Highlights from Around the Web

NVIDIA Sends Shockwaves Through the AI World at GTC 2025

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang just unveiled groundbreaking innovations at GTC 2025 that have the AI and robotics communities buzzing. Here are some of the most exciting announcements:

  1. NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, and Disney Research introduced Newton—an open-source physics engine for advanced robotics simulation.
  2. GROOT N1 debuts: The first fully customizable, open-source humanoid robot foundation model, set to revolutionize general-purpose robotics.
  3. NVIDIA teams up with DeepMind and Disney to unveil Blue—a Star Wars-inspired droid, straight out of sci-fi.
  4. Meet the NVIDIA DGX Spark: The world's smallest AI supercomputer, packing 128GB of memory.
  5. NVIDIA and General Motors partner on next-gen AI: Advancing full self-driving, AI-powered manufacturing, enterprise solutions, and in-car tech.

🌶️ NVIDIA is not resting on its laurels. It’s feeling pressure as everyone jumps in the AI game. Expect the pace of change to accelerate as they push the frontiers.

Sam Altman: OpenAI Building a Consumer Tech Company

In a Stratechery interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discusses the company's evolution from a research lab to a consumer-facing tech giant.

Altman shares the surprising ChatGPT origin story, revealing how it was initially released with GPT-3.5 (not GPT-4) as a "research preview" that unexpectedly exploded in popularity. He explains how this viral success forced rapid scaling of the company in just six months.

On future direction, Altman hints at forthcoming GPT-5 availability in the free tier, possible open-sourcing of models, and his vision of users carrying their "OpenAI identity" across different services.

🌶️ Altman admitted that having a “brand” that people just visit - like ChatGPT - will be more valuable than the model itself. This points to the further commoditization of LLMs and the focus OpenAI will put on its consumer experience moving forward.

"Something is Rotten in the State of Cupertino”

In an analysis, tech analyst John Gruber (Daring Fireball) wrote that Apple is in "disarray, if not crisis" following their announcement that "more personalized Siri" features of Apple Intelligence would be delayed until "the coming year."

Gruber points out that these features were never actually demonstrated at WWDC or subsequent events—Apple only showed concept videos. "Concept videos are bullshit, and a sign of a company in disarray, if not crisis," Gruber writes, noting that the "Apple that commissioned the futuristic 'Knowledge Navigator' concept video in 1987 was the Apple that was on a course to near-bankruptcy a decade later."

The most damning criticism: Apple promoted features in iPhone 16 commercials that they've now had to pull from YouTube after admitting they won't ship anytime soon. "Their headline features from nine months ago not only haven't shipped but still haven't even been demonstrated," Gruber concludes.

🌶️ Apple has not responded to the AI wave. Although it is well positioned to enable AI for personal data - think Siri AI - it has floundered and shipped vaporware. The fact that it ran ads ona. product that wasn’t ready and is now being delayed by almost a year is a worrying sign. Look for leadership changes or a potential acquisition (Perplexity?) to help Apple refocus.
